The Montecito Inn is unique among Santa Barbara landmarks. Located two blocks from the beach, the hotel is a product of Hollywood's Golden Era, built in 1928 by silent screen legend Charlie Chaplin as a haven for tinsel town celebrities.
Today's red tile roof and white plaster walls pay homage to the original construction. In the 1950s, a driveway leading into an enclosed parking facility replaced a terrace and formal garden. Later a pool, spa and sauna were added at the rear of the building. During this renovation, the wishing well that inspired composer Richard Rodgers to write his memorable love song, "There's a Small Hotel" (1963) was lost. A replica of that "well" now sits in the highly acclaimed Montecito Cafe.
Magnificently restored, the Inn's 53 guestrooms are furnished in a French Provincial style with soft floral cotton prints, armoires, overhead fans and hand-painted tile baths. Seven one-bedroom luxury suites feature custom fireplaces and Italian marble bathrooms with Jacuzzi tubs.
The casual, intimate restaurant has a partially open kitchen allowing guests to watch as chef Mark Huston prepares dishes such as goat cheese pancakes with smoked salmon and caviar, daily fresh seafood creations and a "decadent" homemade chocolate mousse cake. Gourmet meals may also be ordered through room service. The warm Cafe Lounge boasts a special appetizer menu, cocktails and fine wines.
Complimentary amenities include a continental breakfast, use of the Inn's touring bicycles and free sightseeing-trolley passes which tour the world famous Mission, Santa Barbara Zoo, Art Museum, Botanical Gardens, Pier and downtown State Street-a visitor's paradise!
The Montecito Inn is a time machine, offering both the quaint elegance and attentive service of the 1920s and the modern conveniences of the finest contemporary hotels. |
