When the Millsaps Buie House came to life in 1888, two mules pulled the city's streetcar along its intended route. Now, the Inn offers its guests cable television and a telephone with computer dataport. It is unique in that it has been in the same family for five generations.
Built in Queen Anne style, the four, two-story fluted columns with their Ionian capitals that were added later suggest a stately home. Once you step inside, you are left with no doubt that this was a stately home, now converted to a boutique hotel for your enjoyment. Ceilings are 14 feet high; hardwood floors are carpeted with oriental rugs. Lace curtains and draperies cover the windows. There is a grand piano in the drawing room and all of the rooms are furnished with antiques and period reproductions.
Guest rooms are unusually spacious. Some have four-poster beds with canopy, French dressing tables or English tables and chairs. It is all warmth and intimacy in an opulent setting. Many of the furnishings are original to the house. The library, foyer and parlor provide guests with privacy for reading or an opportunity for cocktails.
The Millsaps Buie House is located on the crest of one of Jackson's highest hills and commands a view of the downtown area. It is within a short distance of the Governor's Mansion, the Old Capitol Museum and The Oaks. Tours are available of the Old Capitol Museum, the Mississippi Museum of Art, and during the season, semi- professional theater, opera and ballet are available. |
