Hawaii's Royalty once occupied estates throughout Waikiki where visiting guests would be hosted and entertained with lavish luaus and social teas. It was a time when royal children were schooled abroad in the rich traditions and cultures of European monarchies.
Built on the former estate of Prince Kuhio, the Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel recreates subtle opulence exhibited in those Hawaiian estates. A privileged collection of antiques and artwork includes an intricately carved coromandel, Malaysian wood screen, Louis XV chests, a 17th-century French sculpture, a 100-year-old Emperor's chair and an 18th-century Chinese altar table.
The extravagance continues in the guestrooms with hand painted Oriental screens and Chinoiserie bath vanities gilded with accents of real gold. An open-air courtyard is lined with palms and a soothing Italian fountain, and it is here that afternoon tea (the island's only high tea) is served on the weekends. The teatime staff regales visitors with tales of Hawaii's monarchs.
