Crossing a long, camellia-shaded wooden footbridge at the Golden Door, guests enter a serene, luxurious destination spa closely patterned after Japan's historic Honjin travelers' inns. Inside, one of the finest Japanese-style gardens in the world weaves through the Golden Door's many sheltered courtyards, creating a sense of peace and beauty unmatched in the spa world.
Known for its complete attention to the needs of mind, body, and spirit, the small yet hugely famous "Door" cultivates an atmosphere of serenity and congeniality coupled with the most personalized instruction and service found in the spa world.
Only 39 guests a week partake of fitness classes, hikes, beauty treatments, distinguished guest lecturers and class leaders, and world-class cuisine created by Golden Door's master chefs. Most of each meal's ingredients come direct from a 3-acre organic garden on the grounds. A full-time nutritionist gives advice and recommendations.
Primarily a women-only spa ("Founded by a woman for women"), the Golden Door makes an exception for men during five annual men-only weeks, as well as four annual coed weeks.
All guests enjoy private single rooms, even during couples' weeks. Each generously sized accommodation becomes a peaceful, deeply comfortable retreat, complete with garden view and deck, flitting hummingbirds, and sumptuous furnishings. Guests receive a freshly laundered set of spa exercise wear daily, plus a beautiful flowered Japanese yukata (robe) suitable for wearing to meals and around the grounds.
The outside world seems far away from the 377-acre site with its many mountain trails. Each day's combination of vigorous activity and unabashed relaxation and pleasure melts stress and renews stamina: sunrise walks, labyrinth meditation, whirlpool spas, pool exercise, body contouring, steam baths, herbal wraps, massages, facials, hair treatments, tennis, meditation, and much more. Guests choose from more than 80 different fitness classes and activities in a given week, and are encouraged to do as much or as little as they like during their stay.
By the end of the week, staff members and new friends feel like family, and the body fairly hums with a youthful new energy. |
