Just two blocks from Union Square, this handsome renovation has journeyed back in time to emerge as a colonial-style inn, combining charm with sophistication. The interior was meticulously planned, and the decor is characterized by first- rate Chippendale reproductions, beautifully coordinated fabrics, cozy fireplaces, and an air of graciousness with service by an attentive staff.
Guest rooms are bright and cheerful, following Early American themes and colors, and light sleepers will appreciate the soundproofed windows and walls. The piece de resistance is the Jefferson Grand Suite, with two spacious rooms, a good-sized wood-burning fireplace, and a Jacuzzi tub. Added touches such as ample lighting over writing desks, plants, and long telephone cords are appreciated by tourists and business travelers alike. Rather than large public areas, the inn has a personable library where complimentary continental breakfast and evening wine service are offered. Those headed for the financial district can arrange with the concierge to be driven by limousine.
The Monticello's exciting new Puccini & Pinetti Italian Grill & American Bar serves up good food at reasonable prices in a casual atmosphere that out-of-town visitors as well as people who live and work in the area may enjoy. Murals in brilliant hues add to the casual appeal, accentuated by live music in the evenings. Under chef John Sedlar, entrees such as Lamb Shank on Polenta, Pork Loin with White Beans, and Grilled Salmon or Skirt Steak are complemented with a selection of California wines. Portions are generous, but diners might want to save room for the 80-proof tiramisu.
