Hotel Endsleigh is an unique surviving example of Regency taste combining the architecture of Sir Jeffry Wyattville and the landscaping of Sir Humphry Repton. Georgiana, Duchess to the 6th Duke of Bedford created this ‘cottage orné’ during the early 1800’s.
Intended as the summer sporting retreat for the Bedford family, Endsleigh also boasts an internationally famous arboretum including many National Champion trees, a Shell House, grotto, shaded walks, and 108 acres of landscaped gardens and woodlands.
Following the death of the 12th Duke of Bedford in 1953, Endsleigh was run by his Trustees as a country house hotel. In 1962 a group of his fishing friends bought Endsleigh. The Endsleigh Fishing Club began a programme of repairs to the house and in September 2005, when the Hon. Mrs. Olga Polizzi purchased the property, it was lovingly renovated and opened as Hotel Endsleigh in August 2005.
The 16 comfortable rooms have antique furniture and bathrooms with many original features. Of particular interest are the hand painted wallpapers, the longest continuous border in England, the sheeps’ knuckle terrace, heraldic shields in the dining room and stained glass windows, which combine to make a superb and luxurious retreat.
The rooms enjoy views of the gardens, river, historic stable block and clock tower, and quaint slate roofs.
In the winter, meals are served in the original dining room designed by the Duchess or in a cozy private room, candle lit with a crackling fire.
In the summer, dining is al fresco on the terrace or parterre with sweeping views of the ancient woodland, the River Tamar at the bottom of the garden and the Rose walk. Menus change daily for lunch and dinner. Picnics can also be arranged for those wishing to enjoy the grounds or river a little more intimately.
