The building of the Hotel Universo was constructed in 1500.
It was converted into a hotel in 1857, frequented by the great names in Italian and international opera and theater who performed in the theater directly in front of the hotel. It is said that during a visit to Lucca, King Vittorio Emanuele, in a gala evening in which the most honorable citizens were being presented, met the owner of the Hotel Universo, who introduced himself with, "I am the owner of the Universo". "Lucky you" responded the king, "I am quite happy to be the ruler of just Italy!!”
The hotel Universo has a fantastic position, right in the heart of Lucca's historic center. Just steps from the beautiful cathedral, it was in fact one of the very first hotels to be built in the city and still considered one of the historic monuments of 19th century Lucca. Bedrooms are decorated in a traditional, classic style and due to the historic nature of the building vary quite widely in shape and size but also all offer a view over one of Lucca's delightful squares. Public areas include an elegant restaurant, a lounge and reading room, each spacious and exuding an atmosphere of antique grandeur.
